A re-elected Albanese Labor Government will provide $16 million to upgrade the Bega Valley War Memorial Swimming Pool.

Opened in 1962, the pool is a much-loved community asset that is well past its prime. It no longer meets current standards and our community’s needs.

If re-elected, Labor will invest in the pool’s renewal, developing the existing outdoor pool into a new heated ‘extended season’ aquatic facility.

This election commitment will create a regional-level, modern, accessible, multi-dimensional and functional aquatic facility open from September to May.

The upgraded pool will provide enormous health and recreational benefits to the Bega Valley, including increased water safety, education and awareness.

The project will be delivered by the Bega Valley Shire Council with construction expected to take around 18 months.

Labor has listened to community members who want to see this project fully funded, not partially funded – which would see the project become a financial burden to ratepayers.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Quotes attributable to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese:

“Labor is building Australia’s future.

“We will deliver $16 million to upgrade the Bega Valley War Memorial Swimming Pool.

“This is a much loved community facility but is past its prime.

“We will deliver this much needed upgrade so the whole community can enjoy it.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Eden-Monaro, Kristy McBain:

“I’m so proud a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will fully fund this key project for the Bega Valley.

“The current pool is more than 60 years old and no longer meets the needs of our community.

“I want to ensure this project goes ahead fully funded, without the need for Council to raise further capital funds from the community.

“The upgraded pool will be critical in supporting the sporting, health, rehabilitation, education and recreation needs of the Bega Valley Shire well into the future and meet the needs and expectations of the next generation.”
